We love visiting new cities with fresh eyes, but to make the most of any city, it’s great to have some help from a local. To ensure your family doesn’t miss out on its hidden gems, we’ve asked local photographer, Sarah Law for her top 5 best things to do in Portland, OR.
Salt and Straw ice-cream is a ridiculously delicious farm-to-cone shop. They have excellent versions of the tried and true classics, along with the crazy flavors like strawberry with peppered balsamic, and carrot-watermelon sorbet. My go-to order is pear blue cheese, split scoop with salted caramel in a waffle cone. Mmmmmmm.
You must go swimming anywhere on the Washougal River. My secret spot (shhhh) is just past Dougan Falls, through the parking lot, up the dirt road, then you can find parking anywhere in the next mile. This is the most quiet, private, beautiful place to swim in Portland.
Sweedeedee. For breakfast, I recommend the oatmeal or the smoked trout hash. This pretty, little peaceful place is famous for their salted brown butter cake.
Sauvie Island for swimming in summer, pumpkin picking in fall, and berry picking in spring. It is north of town and very family friendly.
Rent a bike and ride around town! Portland is one of the most bike friendly cities in the country.Portland Family Adventures has some excellent suggestions for great family rides.
