  • Start date/Contract dates: January – August 2024 with the potential to extend

  • Live-in/Live-out: The family is offering a newly remodeled guest house (typically used as a short-term rental) on their property for the duration of the contract that includes a lofted bedroom, a living room, a dining area, a full kitchen, a full bathroom, a walk-in closet, laundry, and a deck.
  • Other notes: This candidate also must be able to commit to wearing a mask while teaching and engaging with the family.

Household dynamic:

  • This Hawaii-based family believes in the spirit of Ohana and they are excited to welcome a private educator into their family and community. Their 13-year-old daughter was born with Down syndrome and is described by her parents as being delightful, hilarious, and full of joy and excitement. Unfortunately, she is also undergoing treatment for her third bout of Leukemia. Her prognosis is good, however, throughout her three times of treatment, she has missed a total of three years of school combined. She is a hands-on, curious learner who thrives in one-on-one instruction, but her medical history has increasingly held her back educationally. Due to her severely compromised immune system, she is not able to attend in-person school until next fall and is currently unable to be exposed to other children.
  • These parents are in and out of the home regularly during the day. When they are able, they love to explore the island, travel, and connect with their friends, family, and community. Their daughter also enjoys piano and Tae Kwon Do! They operate with a family attitude of love and grace and believe that all children are capable when they have the right support and tools. They look forward to working with a private educator who shares this belief!

Ideal candidate:

  • This position is ideal for a compassionate educator with experience in special education or early education, who can liaise with parents and other team members, including teachers and therapists. Someone who is warm, nurturing, and who will bond with their student will be valued. The candidate will work with the child’s teacher at school to bring that curriculum home in order to help her meet her academic goals for the year. The ideal candidate will place an emphasis on hands-on learning, as well as math, reading, and writing as these subjects have been most impacted. Candidates will need to wear a mask during indoor instruction and while interacting with the family.
  • Responsibilities include implementing the child’s curriculum and IEPs and collaborating with the classroom teacher, OT, PT, and speech therapists, staying on course with schoolwork, and managing any state-required reporting. This role is solely academic-focused, and the parents manage all childcare-related routines, including before and after school activities.

Qualifications:

  • Special education or early education experience
  • Ability to implement IEPs and complete all necessary reporting for the school
  • At least 3 years of professional teaching experience in a classroom or homeschool setting
  • Must be willing to wear a mask while teaching and interacting with the family
  • Fully vaccinated and boosted (when eligible) against COVID-19 prior to the start date in accordance with applicable laws

This position is open to all Adventure Nannies candidates who are legally able to work in the US. Out of respect for the privacy of the families we work with, we cannot provide any additional information about this position other than what has already been provided in the job description.
