Nationwide

An international, artistic, and adventurous family of four based in Hawaii and Australia is seeking an inquiry-based, Mandarin-speaking private educator to teach their two children!

  • Location: Hawaii and Australia
  • Ages of children: 7 and 9 years old
  • Start date/Contract dates: March 2023 or as soon as they find the right fit
  • Schedule: Candidates can expect to work 20-40 per week based on the family’s travel schedule, with the general schedule falling on Monday-Friday. The family is excited to work with a candidate who is willing to nanny for them in Hawaii for one week out of every month, for the months of April, May, September, October, and November of 2023, and will otherwise work with candidate to determine the best schedule. The family is guaranteeing full-time compensation based on a 40-hour work week.
  • Compensation: The family is offering $50-55/hour based on the 40-hour/week schedule and a private, separate residence on island, equivalent to $30k+/year, which equates to an annualized base compensation of $125-145k/year range dependent on experience and the agreed-upon schedule. The family may be open to candidates who are seeking a higher compensation package commensurate with experience.
  • Benefits: The family is open to providing benefits including paid time off, paid holidays, health insurance stipend, 401k matching, and relocation assistance based on candidate need, and the complete benefits package. The family will provide a vehicle to use while on duty in Hawaii.
  • Live-in/Live-out: Live-out. The family is providing private use of a 3-bedroom house located within 5 minutes of their home. Private and separate accommodations will generally always be provided while traveling, where possible.

Household dynamic:

  • This multinational family has citizenships and residencies in multiple countries, and because of this, their two school-aged boys are truly third-culture kids. The kids love to read, play outdoors, explore the reefs/oceans/rivers/mountains, build their own cities in Minecraft/Roblox/LEGO, and create imaginary storytelling worlds filled with their own characters! Mom and Dad are passionate about science-based learning, first-principle thinking, and raising the boys to be curious, empathetic, and creative humans who care deeply about the world and planet we inhabit.
  • Traveling and exploring nature is a big part of life for this family! Depending on where they are, they enjoy skiing, rafting, biking, and swimming. The family is eager to find an encouraging, collaborative, and dedicated private educator who can provide tailored support for the children’s education through Mandarin (and Traditional Chinese) language immersion. Securing a long-term, multi-year relationship with a private educator is something this family would like to explore.
  • For 9 months a year, the family splits their time between Hawaii and Australia. The other 3-4 months a year, they are in Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Colorado, and beyond! They are excited to find a private educator who shares their enthusiasm for travel and who will be excited to learn more deeply about these places so the kids can participate in local activities.
  • The kids will stay in Hawaii for one week per month for the months of April, May, September, October, and November of 2023, while mom and dad travel for work. The family is hoping to work with a candidate who is eager to care for the kids and enjoy Hawaii with them during those weeks! Basic childcare duties would entail giving rides to and from school, preparing simple dinners, and helping with bedtime and morning routines.

Ideal candidate:

  • This position is ideal for a candidate who is adventurous, loves guiding children’s natural curiosity and creativity, and who likes to teach through inquiry and exploration. Educators who use positive psychology framing and non-violent communication styles and who are kind, empathetic, dynamic, open-minded, and creative will thrive in this role!
  • This family is looking to work with a private educator who is competent in speaking Mandarin (and Traditional Chinese), and confident in teaching Mandarin (Traditional Chinese) using a range of dynamic, progressive pedagogies at the elementary level.

A supportive teacher and well-rounded role model who encourages the growth of the children as a whole will excel.
  • The ideal candidate will be open to some nanny-type responsibilities like driving the children to and from activities, child-related meal prep, assisting the children in cleaning up their areas of the home, and being a general team player!
  • Someone with proven travel nanny/educator experience and who loves outdoor pursuits from hiking to swimming would also be a big plus!
  • Even if you don't have a traditional teaching background, if you are motivated and smart, and you speak Chinese, apply! The family loves working with intelligent, engaging candidates from all career backgrounds.

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Mandarin and ideally familiar with Traditional Chinese at a primary school level.
  • At least 3 years of professional teaching experience in a classroom or homeschool setting, a candidate with comparable in-home nanny experience in addition to proven educational experience may also be considered for the role
  • Valid driver's license and strong driving record
  • Valid passport
  • Fully vaccinated and boosted (when eligible) against COVID-19 prior to starting date in accordance with applicable laws

Bonus Qualifications:

  • High-level, formal education in or experience teaching Mandarin and/or Traditional Chinese.
  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree in early childhood development, STEM, psychology, sports, creative writing/debate, agriculture, or an art-related field.
