June 16th is an extraordinary day for all of us, and we are excited to share the following information directly from the National Domestic Workers Alliance, a phenomenal organization that champions the rights of domestic workers. Keep reading to learn more about this day straight from the incredible folks at the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
Via NDWA: Domestic workers have been organizing to win increased protections at the state, federal, and international levels for generations. International Domestic Workers Day marks the anniversary of the 2011 passage of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 189 for Decent Work for Domestic Workers, establishing international labor law for domestic workers. Since its passage, domestic workers have used this day to honor the vibrancy of the leadership of domestic workers in the fight for better protections across the world, including across the United States. NDWA is proud to stand in solidarity with workers who make all other work possible in the U.S. and around the world and to be a part of the global domestic workers movement.
About the National Domestic Workers Alliance:
Driven by the lived experiences and aspirations of domestic workers, we employ five main strategies to transform the domestic work sector:
- We organize domestic workers and develop leaders
- We develop state, federal, and local policy solutions
- We change the story to shift key narratives and cultural norms
- We use technology to solve for equity and dignity and innovate new solutions
- We mobilize women of color voters
Our national alliance is powered by 70+ grassroots affiliate organizations and chapters across the country and a growing online community of 250,000+ workers.
At NDWA, we bring our vision to life by building power that unites us rather than divides us – we wield that power to win change through our programs and campaigns.
