Domestic Workers Take On Washington!

Today, President Biden is set to announce a comprehensive set of executive actions aimed at improving care for hard-working families, supporting care workers, and providing assistance to family caregivers. Accompanied by people with disabilities, family caregivers, long-term care workers, early educators, veterans, and advocates for the aging, the President will sign an Executive Order with over 50 directives for nearly every cabinet-level agency. These directives will focus on expanding access to affordable, high-quality care and offering support for care workers and family caregivers. These extraordinary, historical changes are the result of so much hard work, community support, and unstoppable activism by so many folks, including the superheroes of the movement, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and Hand In Hand.

Affordable, high-quality care remains out of reach for many families and individuals, with the cost of childcare increasing by 26% in the last decade and by over 200% in the past 30 years. Long-term care costs for the elderly and people with disabilities have risen 40% in the past decade. These financial burdens often lead to Americans, particularly women, staying out of the workforce to care for their families. This makes it difficult for businesses to attract and retain a skilled workforce and hinders economic growth. A BCG brief forecasts annual losses of $290 billion in GDP in 2030 and beyond if the U.S. fails to address the lack of affordable childcare.

Many care workers, who are disproportionately women of color, face low-paying jobs with few benefits, resulting in high turnover rates. Additionally, at least 53 million Americans serve as family caregivers, including over 5 million caring for service members or veterans, and many struggle due to a lack of support, training, and opportunities for rest.

President Biden believes that significant new federal investments are essential for transforming care in the country. That is why he and Vice President Harris have called for investments to support high-quality, affordable childcare, preschool, and long-term care in their fiscal year 2024 budget. While Congress considers these proposals, the President is taking immediate action to make care more affordable for American families, support family caregivers, boost compensation, improve job quality for care workers, and expand care options.

The Executive Order will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Making childcare and long-term care more accessible and affordable for families, including military families.
  2. Improving access to home-based care for veterans.
  3. Boosting job quality for early educators.
  4. Enhancing job quality for long-term care workers.
  5. Supporting family caregivers.
  6. Advancing domestic workers’ rights.
  7. Easing construction of early childhood facilities for Tribes.
  8. Engaging affected communities.

Through these directives, the President aims to create a more supportive and accessible care system for all Americans, providing much-needed relief for families, care workers, and those in need of care.
